Fleet CO₂ Reporting with Commander

The emissions pressure is real, and growing

European climate legislation is no longer a distant target. The European Climate Law mandates at least a 55% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030, with full climate neutrality required by 2050. The “Fit for 55” legislative package is already translating that ambition into binding obligations across industries, including transport and logistics.

For fleet operators, this means one thing above all: you need to measure before you can reduce. Quantifying, monitoring, and transparently reporting the environmental impact of your vehicle operations is rapidly moving from voluntary best practice to regulatory expectation.

Scope 1 emissions: the fleet’s direct footprint

A company’s Scope 1 emissions are the direct greenhouse gas emissions from sources it owns or controls, and for most organisations with a vehicle fleet, mobile combustion is the dominant Scope 1 category. Fuel burned by your trucks, vans, and cars goes directly onto your environmental balance sheet.

The challenge is granularity. Aggregate fuel invoices tell you how much you spent; they don’t tell you which vehicle, which driver, which route, or which operational pattern is driving emissions. Without that breakdown, reduction targets have no foundation.

Commander’s CO₂ reporting module

Commander’s telematics platform captures the operational data that makes emissions reporting meaningful. Every kilometre driven, every engine-on period, and every fuel consumption reading flows into Commander in real time. The CO₂ calculation functionality converts that data into reportable emissions figures, by vehicle, by department, by date range, or across the entire fleet.

This capability is being actively expanded. Rosenberger Telematics collaborated with BA student Paul Selhofer (Supply Chain Management, University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria) on a thesis analysing dashboard requirements for visualising Scope 1 emissions, ensuring that the reporting layer is not just accurate, but genuinely usable by sustainability and fleet managers alike.

Measurement is the starting point. The real value comes from what you do next. With per-vehicle emissions data visible in Commander, fleet managers can:

• Identify high-emission vehicles or routes and prioritise for optimisation or electrification
• Benchmark fuel consumption per vehicle and connect eco-driving programmes to measurable CO₂ outcomes
• Track progress against internal or regulatory reduction targets over time
• Generate audit-ready reports for corporate sustainability disclosures

The “Fit for 55” trajectory is clear. Fleets that build emissions visibility now will have the data infrastructure to adapt. Those that don’t will be scrambling to catch up. Commander gives you the clarity to act before the deadline, not after it.
